"Gisborne" - New Zealand
 |
 | Historic
First Landing
|
Young Nick, on
his way to Tahiti, spotted New Zealand in October 1769. This spot is now
known as Young Nicks Head, although some say that what he spotted was the
inner ranges. Captain Cook then landed at Kaiti Beach, where in an
earlier time the Maori Waka, Horouta, also came ashore. |
 | First to See
the sun
|
From Kaiti Hill
you will have magnificent views of Gisborne, Waikanae Beach to Young
Nicks Head, and in the early morning be the fist person in the world to see
the new sunrise of the day. Originally Call Turanga, like Tauranga in
the Bay of Plenty, it was to confusing for the early settlers and so in 1870
the name was changed to Gisborne, after SR William Gisborne.

 | Surfs Up
|
The Gisborne area on
the East coast, while not returning much for Capt. Cook who called it
Poverty Bay, now produces good Food, Wine and Surf. Many Beaches along the
coast, like Wainui are world famous for good surfing. Also a little north
the scenes from Whale Riders will become realistic in every way. |
 | Scenic
Wonders
|
While the "Eastwoodhill
Arboretum" is a world renowned tree and shrub collection in a rambling park
on the road to Rere, more scenic wonders lie hidden inland of
Gisborne. A visit to Matawai and a stay overnight will give you time to see
the magnificent Motu Falls and catch some history of this forgotten area. |
