 | The Fire of
Tamatea
|
As the Fire of Tamatea
erupted from Ngauruhoe in the Central North Island to warm the fable
Ngatoroirangi, a piece of the fire dropped from the sky at Hanmer to form
the original hot springs, so the Maori legend goes. While Pakeha, William,
Jones in 1859 investigated the are of a "remarkable fog". |

20 years late
the first changing shed was built and a flag poll carrying a pair of trouser
warned that the men were enjoying the hot thermal waters. A dress
denoted the opposite. Many historic buildings still stand today like the old
Post Office, now a favourite Restaurant.

 | Light up the
Town
|
Gasses
collected from the thermal underground provided the town with light and
cooking. The Gas storage cylinder can be seen at the entrance to the Hanmer
Springs Thermal Reserve and Play Ground area in the centre of town. |
 | Autumn
Leaves
|
You could just take time out for a
stroll around the many scenic streets, especially in
autumn with all it's colour. There are also many Walks through the Forests
and Mountains, like the Conical Hill, a 1 Hour
return walk to a magnificent view of the Hanmer area. |
