A whaling station
in the early 1800's, and even early a haven for the Maori Canoes travelling
up the coast from Oamaru to Banks Peninsula . Te Maru, "the Place of
Shelter". Now known as Timaru, "Sheltering Cabbage Tree", because of
the incorrect spelling by Early Europeans. |

Bay Hill

Caroline Bay is linked to the
Bay Hill and town centre by the Piazza, where the Christmas Carnival springs
to life for three weeks each year. A short stroll, after taking
in the view at Bay Hill, will take you to many historic buildings
scattered around Timaru.

 | Stone Tower
|
St Mary's Anglican Church built in
around 1880 from crenellated stone
squares, using twelfth century early English architecture, towers to the sky
. Not only around the town but a trip to Claremont, Temuka or
Geraldine will take you bake in time to Timaru's early European days where
you can visit Museums and magnificently restored South Canterbury
Homesteads. |
 | A Short
Flight
|
A short flight, well a few
metres, from the St Mary's Church you will find the Timaru Museum. Here on
display amongst many other fine exhibits is a tribute to Richard Pearse,
Temuka's most famous son, "Mad Pearse". Constructing flying
machines from bamboo and steel. At Temuka, only a short trip away, you can
see more of this famous aviator.
