The Gold Rush

Gold bearing quartz set this town alive in 1878. Tents and huts rose up to be soon replaced by Miners Cottages.  Where in 1908, Waihi became the fastest growing town in the Auckland province.
Visit the past, and make Waihi a stop over on your way to the Bay of Plenty.

$1,000,000 a Week

The mighty Martha Mine  had produced 5.6 million ounces of gold and 38.4 million ounces of silver, when it closed in 1952 from Tunnels and shafts. Today the Mine still operates producing one million dollars of gold and silver a week. Martha Mine Tours must be booked and operate weekdays.

The History

Like the many Miners Cottages still settled around Waihi, the Cornish Pump House, a relic of the original Martha Mine, built in 1904 is protected by the Historic Places Trust. These historic buildings are well worth a tour of the Town.

Miners Trail

A stroll down the many miners trails and walkways will take you to an "Open Air Museum" of relics left by the miners towns and batteries. These Karangahake Walkways, at Karangahake George, are situated on the picturesque route between Paeroa and Waihi.

Stay close to the tracks as mining shafts are still bound in this area.
