Whakatane, on the outlet of the
Whakatane River,
is surrounded by vast areas of exotic forest.
The River passes through some of
New Zealand's scenic National Parks.
One of these is Te Urewera National Park,
the North Islands Largest untouched native forest.

|
A statue of Wairaka stands at the Whakatane heads.
Tradition has it , that the early Polynesian Males went ashore leaving the Women in a
drifting canoe. Paddles of the canoe were Tapu to the women. But not to be left helpless,
Wairaka cried "Kai Whakatane au I ahau" I will act as a man and so the captains
daughter took up the paddle and returned the canoe to shore. |

A canoe similar to that of the past can be seen on
the foreshore of the Whakatane. Along with other
historic points of interest. Pohaturoa Rock in the
centre of town and the Nga Tapuwae O Toi Walkway.
