The Story of
Waikite Valley Thermal poolsWaikite - (Wai = Water Kite =
Hot)
The natural thermal waters of Waikite Valley have for centuries been
used by the people of Ngati Kahu Upoko, then in recent years by the local farming
community whom used to swim further down the Otamarokokore Stream where the hot and cold
creeks meet.
In 1971 the local community decided to band together and build a
suitable bathing facility, after some 4000 hours of volunteer labour and various raising
activities the Waikite Valley Thermal Pools were developed.
The pools today are leased out under the administration of the Rotorua
District Council but still remains in principal under local ownership.
The water for the pools are sourced from a series of geothermal springs
that bubble out of the ground at a scalding 98o C (190o F). It is then gravity fed to the
top of the cascades where it is then cooled to a comfortable bathing temperature before
entering the pools.
There is no chemicals added to the water and so relies upon the constant
flow of water in and out of the pools at all times, keeping the water fresh and clean, the
pools are emptied and cleaned for use the next day.
Although there are no proven medical benefits in bathing in the Waikite
Valley Thermal Pools it is of our opinion that the water here is good for Body-Mind and
Soul.
So please come soak and enjoy!
