Through the Whanganui National Park, with its tranquility
and scenic beauty, to the wild west Coast, Whanganui River provides the longest
navigable stretch of River in the country. Known as the, "Rhine of New Zealand"
in the early 1900's it provided access to the river people of long ago. |
 | Banks of History
|
On every bank of the Whanganui River lies the History and
culture of the area. Scenic tours will tell of the early Maori and Europeans. The Old
Flourmill at Matahiwi and the church and convent of Jerusalem, home of the late poet,
James K Baxter and Sister Mary Aubert whose mission still stands to this day. Jet Boat
tours from Pipiriki will take you to the Bridge to Nowhere, where tried to tame the
wilderness but did not survive.

A 1000 hanging baskets adorn the streets of Wanganui, between December
and March of each year, bringing the restored heritage buildings to there former glory.
Streets come alive, Walks meander throughout the heritage trails and parks, with the
Gardens and reserves all adding to the scenic beauty of Wanganui City.

Restoration of New Zealand's first registered River Boat,
offers you the opportunity to cruise the Whanganui River, in the style and pace of our
early settlers. Paddle and Steam provide the propulsion in the way that complemented the
